It was oâdark thirty, and Joan was sitting on the steps of Eddyâs cabin with two go-cups of coffee when the front door quietly opened behind her.
âJoanie,â he sighed, sending a shiver of awareness over her skin. âYou know coming to the cabin isnât safe. What are you doing here?â
She picked up a cup and offered it to him. âStarbucks doesnât deliver, but I do.â
A sly expression touched his eyes, and he smiled as he took the coffee. He leaned in to give her a soft kiss, almost melting Joanâs resolve to stick her nose in his business today. Almost. When he drew back, he whispered, âWhat else do you deliver?â
âThis morning? Just coffee and a sidekick. Figured youâd need it after your late-night visit to Barronâs Park. You forget our niece loves us. She was worried about you and called me this morning.â
His smile whooshed away faster than she could blink, and he scanned the tree line the way sheâd seen him do hundreds of times before. âYou should come inside. Better yet, you should go home.â
âNope.â
âReidâs got state-of-the-art security there and I only have . . . What did you say?â
âUh-uh. No, sir. Not happening.â
âDammit, Joanieââ
âWe may have lived in separate houses for the better part of two decades, but I know you, Eddy Steele. If you believe Henry McKay is skulking around Steele Ridge, then youâre planning to do something about it.â
âI donât think it. I know.â
Now it was her turn to go blank. âWhat?â
Eddy grabbed her hand and pulled her to her feet. âInside. I feel like the trees have eyes today.â
This time, her shiver wasnât from awareness of the man sheâd loved since she was a young woman, it was a byproduct of fear. Inside, she sat on the couch that would make a comfy spot to spend Saturday afternoons snuggling with Eddy. Assuming he would ever voluntarily allow her in his cabin.
She loved Tupelo Hill, but getting away from her own home should be way easier with grown kids. However it seemed like someone was always parading through her house. As much as she loved her brood, there were times when it would be nice to have the privacy Eddy enjoyed.
He sat in the recliner on her left and propped his elbows on his knees, letting his steepled fingers support his chin. âMcKay paid me a little visit last night after I left your place.â
His stealthy departure was something sheâd planned to take him to task for this morning, but Joan found she didnât have the gumption in light of this new information about Henry. She glanced around, now understanding Eddyâs unease. âHe could have killed you.â
âNot yet. He wants something too much to do that.â His eyes closed, but not before Joan saw the pain in them. âHe wants to meet Kris.â
âOh, no.â She grabbed his hands, forcing him to open his eyes. âThat will destroy her. Sheâs a happy young woman. Sometimes secrets protect people.â Wasnât that why she and Eddy had kept so many over the years?
âNo, sweetheart, secrets can only do that for so long.
